ABE - Adult Basic Education

Program Description

Adult Basic Education (ABE) is for students who read below a 9th grade level as determined by the CASAS Reading Assessment Test. ABE is a foundational course in reading, writing, and math. Students work on reviewing and learning these skills to help prepare for HSD or HiSET. After 40 hours of instruction, students retake the CASAS. The score must be 239 or higher to be promoted to the next program.

Program Placement

ABE 1 - Students who score below 231 on the CASAS Reading Assessment will be placed in an intensive program meeting Monday – Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (12 hours per week). They must complete 40 hours within four weeks and retest. Attendance is required. Consistent participation is essential for improving reading comprehension skills.

ABE 2 - Students who score 231–238 on the CASAS Reading Assessment will be assigned to a morning or afternoon session based on teacher determination and class capacity. They must attend 12 hours per week, complete 40 hours within four weeks, and retest. Limited independent study may be available depending on student score and teacher determination.
