HSD - High School Diploma

Program Description:

HSD students take independent study classes, APEX courses, and participate in small group instruction to earn 150 credits for their high school diploma. Students must meet with their instructor a minimum of 4 hours per week and complete 5 credits every 4 weeks to maintain enrollment. Students have appointment times to meet with their teacher for tests/quizzes and also to receive additional work. The lab is open through-out the day (no appointment needed) for students to work independently.

Our counselor reviews transcripts from previous schools to determine courses needed. Official transcripts are required for placement in the High School Diploma Program. LBSA does not accept elective credits or partial credits. To receive a LBSA diploma at least 10 credits must be completed at LBSA. All students will be required to take a reading and math assessment as a part of the registration process. A score of 239 or higher is needed on the CASAS Reading Assessment to qualify for this program.

The lab is open during the following days and times:

  • Monday - Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Our High School Diploma Program is free and students in good standing are able to participate in our graduation ceremony in June. Additionally, students qualify for the Long Beach Promise which provides 2 years for free at LBCC.

We require official transcripts. Official transcripts are provided to the main office by the student, and in person.  Official transcripts are sealed and unopened in an envelope from the most recent school of attendance.    Transcripts are evaluated by our counselor and are required a minimum of one week in advance of the students registration appointment.  Students who do not submit official transcripts one week in advance of the appointment will NOT be able to participate in the scheduled registration appointment.  Official transcripts from Parchment, LBUSD Records Management or another out of state official entity WILL be accepted by email. Please inquire in the office for an email address to have official transcripts sent.

Our counselor determines the number of credits needed to earn our diploma.  Our goal is to have students earn their diploma in one year or less, however our program is a self-paced independent program and completion is based on the student and their pace.  (Special note: all students must meet the minimum standard [see above] to maintain enrollment in our program).  We will not turn students away from earning their diploma, however the counselor works with students to determine to best and fastest path (HSD or HiSET) of finishing at adult school with a diploma or equivalency if students have limited transfer credits from their previous school(s).
